U.S. Domestic Violence Statistics

Domestic violence is an epidemic affecting individuals in every community regardless of age, economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or nationality.

It is often accompanied by emotionally abusive and controlling behavior that is only a fraction of a systematic pattern of dominance and control.

Every second, three people in the United States become a victim of domestic violence. This means each year, more than 10 million Americans experience domestic abuse.

Spousal Abuse Impacts the Entire Family

One in 15 children are exposed to intimate partner violence each year, and 90% of those children are eyewitnesses to the violence.

Domestic Violence Repeats Itself

Men who are exposed to domestic violence as children are three to four times more likely to perpetrate domestic violence as adults.

65% of domestic violence goes untreated

Only 34% of people who are injured by intimate partners receive medical care for their injuries.

S.A.F.E serves three main counties in Southern West Virginia, McDowell, Mercer, and Wyoming. Mercer County ranked third in the state for domestic violence reported cases.
